About the Position: The position is located at North Athlantic Regional Dental Command, Water Reed Army Medical Center. There is easy accessibility to public transportation. Work involves danger of exposure to radiation and communicable diseases. Assistant uses lead shields to protect against radiation and wears face-mask during treatment procedures. Long periods of bending, standing and walking are required.

DENTAL ASSISTANT
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

General Schedule Specialized Experience: Experience in dental assistance to general or specialized dentistry, dental assistant (expanded function) work, or any combination of these appropriate to the position being filled.
Knowledge of the instruments, materials and standardized dental procedures used in a wide variety of specialized dental treatments along with related general dentistry procedures, to make preparations and provide chair-side or surgical assistance.
Knowledge of hospital operating room protocol to schedule procedures and to follow accepted standards of sterile technique.
Knowledge of oral anatomy and bony structure of face to take diagnostic dental radiographs.
Knowledge of the various X-ray developing methods to process all types of exposed radiographic film and sufficient skill to operate and adjust equipment.
Knowledge of techniques and materials used in the treatment of injuries to primary and permanent teeth.
Knowledge of preventive dentistry measures sufficient to instruct patients in good oral hygiene, causes of decay, etc.
Knowledge of asept4,c surgical procedures to assist in taking biopsies and tissue samples.
Knowledge of basics of normal occlusion sufficient to articulate most dental casts.
Detailed knowledge of tooth anatomy, both internal and external, to be able to select and place rubber dam clamps; to select canal fitting points, and to place inter-appointment medicaments.
Knowledge of scheduling multiple appointments required for certain dental procedures to allow ample time between dentist visits and requested laboratory procedures.
Knowledge of dental instruments sufficient to determine serviceability and need for placement.
Knowledge of splinting and stablizing materials and techniques sufficient to assist ntist.
Knowledge of, and skill to detect signs of syncope, shock, or other side reactions to dental treatment in patient?s.
Skill and dexterity in manipulating materials and instruments intra-orally to effectively assist the doctor in suture placement and removal, change dressings, make impressions, fitting and placing prostheses and placement adjustment and removal of orthodontic bands, head guard, etc., while working in a small area.The experience described in your resume will be evaluated and screened for the Office of Personnel Management's basic qualifications requirements, and the skills needed to perform the duties of this position as described in this vacancy announcement.Your pay will be set within the range specified in this vacancy announcement and will be based on your qualification, education, experience, training, and availability of funds.NSPS positions are excluded from time-in-grade restrictions.On your resume, please include college/university, dates attended, degree achieved, semester hours earned, GPA, major field of study, 24 semester hours of specific courses and course hours in your major. Assists the dentist in the treatment of patients requiring complex restorative and difficult oral surgery, oral pathology, prosthodontic, periodontic, endodontic, pedodontic or orthodontic treatments. Receives and schedules patients for treatment , Obtains and records information related to medical history of patient, routes patients for medical tests and services when required, stores dental and special supplies. Prepares sterile trays and packs for a wide variety of dental procedures. Cleans and sterilizes materials, instruments and equipment. Maintains dental -equipment in a clean and operative condition. Operates dental X-ray equipment to include taking routine and specialized radiographs such as panoramic and cephalometric. Develops and finishes film. Maintains an X-ray file on completed cases and patients under active treatment and applies rubber dam. Makes preparations for and assists dentist in operating room.
