While some emergency program support assignments may be able to be performed at the employee's current duty station, in other cases employees may be asked to go on-site to a temporary duty station location.In addition, it may be necessary for employees to participate in multiple rotations to an emergency program assignment.Attempts will be made to keep disruption to the employee to a minimum. 24PQ-2008-0132 Plant Protection Technician QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED: Qualifications:To qualify, you MUST meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement. QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS FOR THE GS-5/6/7 GRADE LEVELS: Applicants must have 1 year of specialized experience equivalent in level of difficulty and responsibility to the next lower level in the Federal service.Qualifying specialized experience must have provided familiarity with the methods, procedures, and techniques involved in inspecting, detecting, identifying, eradicating, suppressing, or controlling plant pests, and in the enforcement of Federal and State quarantines.Examples of qualifying specialized experience include: * Inspecting nursery plants for the presence of a specific plant pest. * Surveying areas for specific plant pests or for the presence of alternate plant hosts. * Developing rough maps showing control or eradication treatment completed, areas surveyed, or pest finds located. * Performing survey control or eradication procedures in a local pest control program. * Answering questions regarding plant pest control procedures, harmful side-effects of pesticides to other living organisms, etc. * Inspecting vehicles in the enforcement of plant quarantine regulations. * Performing laboratory work involved with raising and/or sterilizing various insects. OR EDUCATION SUBSTITUTION FOR THE GS-5 GRADE LEVEL: Successful completion of a 4 year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university, that included at least 16 semester hours in courses such as biology, plant pathology, entomology, zoology, botany, forestry, chemistry, agriculture or physics, is fully qualifying. OR EDUCATION SUBSTITUTION FOR THE GS-6 GRADE LEVEL: Successful completion of six full months of graduate education, that included at least 9 semester hours in courses such as biology, plant pathology, entomology, zoology, botany, forestry, chemistry, agriculture or physics. OR EDUCATION SUBSTITUTION FOR THE GS-7 GRADE LEVEL: Successful completion of 1 full year of graduate education that included at least 18 semester hours in courses such as biology, plant pathology, entomology, zoology, botany, forestry, chemistry, agriculture or physics. 24PQ-2008-0132 Plant Protection Technician Additional Duty Location Info:1 vacancy - Melbourne, FL MAJOR DUTIES: BackToTop(); Duties:The duties described are for the full-performance level.At developmental grade levels, assignments will be of more limited scope, performed with less independence and limited complexity. The incumbent serves as a technician for Plant Protection and Quarantine (PPQ).The incumbent is assigned a geographic area for which they have responsibility for helping PPQ Officers with the planning, coordinating and directing the survey, control, and regulatory functions for PPQ programs, including biocontrol and biotechnology activities. The major duties and responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:Participates fully with the supervisor in planning, scheduling, and coordinating survey and control measures conducted within their assigned area by furnishing specific information about their work area that will allow successful program accomplishment.Inspects and surveys properties for the presence of harmful plants, insects and plant diseases. Directs and/or conducts approved control and eradication measures including the adoption of cultural practices, sanitation measures, biological controls, and the application of herbicides, insecticides, nematicide, and fungicides in proper proportion or dosages.Enforces Federal and/or State plant quarantines and regulatory orders which restrict movement of plants, plant products, and equipment into or out of regulated areas.Maintains daily records of inspection work, control measures and regulatory procedures applied.
