JOB SUMMARY:
This is a permanent excepted, full-time position.Annual and sick leave, health and life insurance as well as an annuity plan offered.

The duty station is the John Cochran Division; however, the duty station may be changed to one or multiple associated VAMC locations within the metropolitan St. Louis, MO area based on the needs of the medical center.

Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
QUALIFICATIONS:
All applicants must be certified as a Diagnostic Radiology Technician by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologist (ARRT).
Experience or Education.Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate?s degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT), and certification by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) in radiology.
To qualify for GS-9:
Experience:Completion of 1 year of experience equivalent to the GS-8 level directly related to the position being filled, and must fully meet the KSAs at that level.In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs and demonstrate the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*):
*(1) Ability to balance the needs of the patients and staff while still performing complex scans and procedures;
(2)Skill to demonstrate appropriate techniques to gather relevant information from the medical record, significant others, and health care providers;
*(3)Ability to assess factors that may contraindicate the procedure;
(4)Knowledge of basic first aid and basic life support practices related to radiography;
(5)Knowledge of physical assessment, aseptic techniques, intravenous skills, and universal precautions; and
(6)Knowledgeable in pre-procedural, procedural, and post-procedural care of patients.
To qualify for GS-10:
Experience:Completion of 1 year of experience equivalent to the GS-9 level directly related to the position being filled, and must fully meet the KSAs at that level.In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs and demonstrate the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*):
*(1)Thorough knowledge of radiation protection standards, devices and techniques including concepts of accumulated dosage and genetic changes;
*(2)Skill to recognize changes in equipment and procedures that might result in increased exposures, and recommend methods to prevent such exposures;
*(3)Knowledge of basic physics including concepts of energy, electric power, magnetic fields, and properties of x-ray, in order to understand the operation of the equipment; and
(4)Knowledge and skill in positioning of patients for a wide variety of difficult radiographic (CT, MRI, Special Procedures, Mammography, etc.) studies.

Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist

MAJOR DUTIES:

Position performs general diagnostic radiology using conventional, CR and DR techniques.The incumbent will perform quality assurance procedures, using effective communication skills and preparing reports on findings.Quality assurance oversight for:technique, exposure, collimation, labeling, patient positioning, patient privacy, patient identification and proper image association with patient and image transfer to PACs.Confers with radiologists to determine requirement of non-standard exams.Determines technical factors, positioning, etc., to produce and satisfy requirements of general imaging and CT.Works with radiologist as a member of the radiographic team, assisting and anticipating the needs of the radiologists and the performance of the exam.Prepares contrast materials used in general imaging exams performed in the general area.Performs CR readings of exposed plates and assures correct display in PACs.Other duties include:perform exams requested by electronic requisition; performs darkroom procedures such as loading and unloading of magazines, etc., responsible for explaining exams to competent patients; prepares oral reports to the staff concerning quality assurance within the department; serves as the radiology service quality control technologist; enters specific patient data into a computer; coordinates work of the lower grade technologists and provides guidance as necessary to complete the exam. At the GS-9 level and below, incumbent will perform the duties described for the full performance level position, but with closer supervision and guidance provided.
