PH-JC-8-174314 Park Ranger QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED: In order to qualify for this position at the GS-7 grade level, you must possess one of the following requirements: A. One year of specialized experience comparable in level of difficulty and responsibility to the GS-5 level in the Federal service with experience as a park ranger performing resource protection and law enforcement; developing and conducting public education or interpretive programs; and performing emergency medical services, search and rescue, and fire suppression. B. One year of graduate education with major study in natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. C. Successful completion of a full four-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study in natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources, --AND-- Meet one of the following provisions for Superior Academic Achievement: 1. A standing in the upper third of your college class or major subdivision (e.g. school of business) at the time you apply.2. A grade point average of "B" (3.0 on a 4.0 scale) or its equivalent for all courses completed; (a) at the time of application; or (b) during the last two years of your undergraduate curriculum.3. A "B+" (3.5. on a 4.0 scale) or its equivalent for all courses completed in a qualifying major field of study, either:(a) at the time of application; or (b) during the last 2 years of your undergraduate curriculum.4. Election to membership in one of the national honorary societies (other than freshman societies). D. A combination of education and experience described in "A" and "B" above. If you have some but not all of the experience or education described above, you may still qualify by combining the amount of creditable experience and education that you do have. To do so, convert each to a percentage and then add the percentages the sum of which must equal at least 100%. PH-JC-8-174314 Park Ranger Additional Duty Location Info:1 vacancy - Skagway, AK MAJOR DUTIES: BackToTop(); The incumbent serves as a park ranger performing resource protection and public use management in the Ranger Services Division of Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park, Skagway, Alaska.The incumbent is responsible for appropriate law enforcement to protect park natural, cultural, historical, and human resources.The incumbent develops and conducts various public education or interpretive programs to accomplish program objectives.Other duties of the position include emergency medical service, search and rescue, wild land and structural fire prevention or suppression, and execution of various public use management programs.May also assist with the management of natural or cultural resources, collection of fees, and the management of commercial and special park uses. AREA INFORMATION:Position is located at Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park, Skagway, Alaska. Skagway is located 90 air miles northwest of Juneau, AK and is the northern terminus of the Alaska Marine Highway ferry system. The city isa major cruise ship destination between May and September and Klondike Gold Rush NHP is the most visited national park area in Alaska. Skagway has a population of 862 year-round residents with three to four times that number in the summer. The town offers a grocery store, hardware store, cafes, library, community recreation center, post office, video store, news/book store, coffee shop, and churches of several denominations. Excellent hiking and boating opportunities abound. Major purchases are made either through the mail or by trips to nearby cities like Juneau and Whitehorse, Yukon. There is a small clinic for minor medical treatment. Major medical and dental facilities are available in Juneau, Whitehorse, Anchorage, AK or Seattle, WA. Skagway has excellent transportation connections and the town can be reached by road (Klondike Highway), small aircraft, and the Alaska state ferry system. Average high/low temperatures in July: 68/50 degrees F. Average annual precipitation is 26.5 inches.
