WHAT DOES AN EXAMINATION TECHNICIAN DO?
Examination Technician positions exist in many IRS organizations.In
W&I, SB/SE, they are Correspondence and Examination Technicians who
examine tax returns and communicate with taxpayers through phone or
correspondence; or provide support to tax compliance officers and
revenue agents during their examinations.In LMSB, they support team
members and team coordinators as Examination Technicians i.e.,
preparation of comparative financial analysis, reconciliation,
Excel/Access spreadsheet and database analysis, IMS input, etc.They
are Intake Technicians in TAS who answer and manage incoming
telephone calls and customer inquiries as the first point of
contact.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
GS-6 To qualify for this position at this grade level you must
have at least one year of specialized experience at the next lower
level in the Federal service.
In addition, applicants for this position must be able to type 40
words per minute (based on a 5-minute sample with 3 or fewer errors).
To qualify for this position at the GS-06 grade
level, you must have at least one year (12
months), or more of specialized experience:
Specialized experience is experience that is in
or related to this position and provided you with
the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to
perform successfully the duties of this
position. Examples of experience qualifying as
specialized include:preparing, receiving,
reviewing, and verifying documents; processing
transactions; maintaining office records; and
locating and compiling data or information from
files and other data sources; processing a
variety of tax returns and reports; examining tax
returns and supporting documents for current and
prior year and amended returns; and contacting
customers through correspondence or telephone to
obtain information, explain liability, and
encourage compliance.This list is not
inclusive.To be creditable, this experience
must have been equivalent to at least the GS-05
grade level in the Federal service.
EVALUATION OF FOREIGN EDUCATION:Qualifying education from colleges
and universities in foreign countries must be evaluated in terms of
equivalency to that acquired in U.S. colleges and universities.
Applicants educated in whole or in part in foreign countries must
submit sufficient evidence, including transcripts; to an accredited
private organization for an equivalency evaluation of course work,
including grade and credit conversion, and degree.You must provide
a copy of the letter containing the results of the equivalency
evaluation as supporting documentation.Failure to provide such
documentation when requested will result in lost consideration.
Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must certify at the

As an Examination Technician you will perform clerical and technician
work in support of accounting, budget, auditing, or financial
management of a fiscal operation.The clerical work involves
compiling figures, maintaining records, compiling reports, or
performing other procedural work which represents the transactions or
business of an organization.You will examine accounts to verify the
accuracy of accounts and the adequacy of supporting data.You will
also prepare worksheets or reports reflecting the examinations made,
discrepancies noted, and the corrective entries required adjusting
accounts.
Examination Technicians work in various functional areas within the
IRS, therefore your specific duties may vary according to your
assignment.As an Examination Technician, you may be responsible for
a select segment or phase of an examination, which involves
searching, locating, and documenting specific information from the
taxpayer's books or records.This includes researching taxpayer's
records electronically and compiling data for revenue agent or tax
compliance officer. You may be responsible for scheduling
appointments and preparing and mailing correspondence.You may read
and analyze correspondence, notices, schedules etc. to determine
taxpayer's intent on the application of payments, to determine if
additional action is necessary and route to the appropriate area.
You may also be responsible for coding and editing remittance
amounts, tax periods and name controls when necessary.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Citizenship:Under Executive Order 11935, only United States
