36-2009 Physician QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED: Board certification in Internal Medicine or Family Practice is preferred. BASIC REQUIREMENTS: CITIZENSHIP.Citizen of the United States.(Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3g, this part.) PHYSICAL STANDARDS:Applicants for this position must pass a pre-employment medical examination.Incumbent must be able to maintain the physical standards required by this position.This position is a drug-testing designated position subject to random testing for illegal drug use. ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: Physicians appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7405(f). EDUCATION.Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine.The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.Approved schools are: Schools of medicine holding regular institutional membership in the Association of American Medical Colleges for the year in which the degree was granted. Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted. Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico), or in the District of Columbia as qualifying for full or unrestricted licensure. For residents, graduation from an approved medical school as described above is required except as provided in M-8, part II, chapter 1. NOTE:The Under Secretary of Health or designee in Central Office may approve the appointment under authority of 38 U.S.C. 7405 of a physician graduate of a school of medicine not covered above if the candidate is to be assigned to a research or academic position with no patient care responsibilities.The appointment will be made only in exceptional circumstances where the candidate?s credentials clearly demonstrate high professional attainment or expertise in the specialty area.(See chapter 3, section B,paragraph 14 of this part, on waiver of licensure provisions.) You must be a U.S. citizen to qualify for this position. You must submit to a drug test and receive a negative drug test before you can be appointed into this position. You must have a certification, licensure, or registration credentials in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. for this position.
