PH-09-061 Interdisciplinary Engineer QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED: In addition to the basic requirement, one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the next lower grade level in the Federal Government.Specialized experience is experience that equipped the candidate with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position being filled.Qualifying specialized experience for this position is professional engineering work that demonstrates a thorough, comprehensive knowledge of concepts, principles and practices of engineering in the mining industry, specifically regarding ventilation procedures and principles in underground mines, plants and tunnel operations. A degree in professional engineering.To be acceptable, the curriculum must: (1) be in a school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) as a professional engineering curriculum; or (2) include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics.For additional information on the education requirements, please visit:http://www.opm.gov/qualifications/SEC- IV/B/GS0800/0800.HTM. PH-09-061 Interdisciplinary Engineer Additional Duty Location Info:1 vacancy - Pittsburg (Bruceton), PA1 vacancy - Throughout West Virginia, WV MAJOR DUTIES: BackToTop(); This position is located in the Ventilation Division, Pittsburgh Safety and Health Technology Center, Bruceton, PA or Triadelphia, WV. The Ventilation Division provides technical services and consultation for Federal and State mining enforcement officials, industry management and labor, and others on complex safety and health issues related to ventilation concerning the industries of coal, metal and nonmetal.This position is Interdisciplinary, and may be filled as either Civil Engineer, General Engineer, Mechanical Engineer or Mining Engineer, and in this capacity, the incumbent conducts engineering investigations using engineering theories and applied research techniques in the solution of problems related to mine ventilation.Performs surface, underground, and industrial ventilation studies in the field of mine and tunnel ventilation, conducts such mathematical review and analysis of data as may be required, and prepares an analysis and evaluation of the results. Plans and conducts underground pressure-air quantity surveys of complex mine ventilation systems, provides such measurements of air pressure, quantity, relative humidity and quality as may be necessary for evaluation of all or a part of the mine ventilation system. Plans and conducts specialized mine ventilation nvestigations dealing with specific problems in ventilation and dust control in the immediate working place, gob areas and other critical areas.As a lead member of a mine ventilation survey team or investigation, the incumbent plans the methods to be used and the scope of the activity.In addition, the incumbent separates into proper sequence, evaluations, and prepares data of mathematical analysis; prepares such engineering graphs or flow distribution drawings as necessary.The incumbent will be assigned to assist the Ventilation Division during mine emergency responses, and serves as a member of the Center's Mine Emergency Response Team. Duties at GS-05 thru GS-11 are developmental assignments, and as the incumbent progresses, the assignments become more difficult and complex, leading up to the full performance level.
