Physician - Psychiatrist, Mental Health Service
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
In accordance with VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G2:
(a) Citizenship:Must be a citizen of the United States
(b) Education: Doctor of medicine degree or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
(c) Licensure and Registration: Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a state, Territory, or commonwealth of the US, or in the District of Columbia.
(d) First-Year Residency (Internship):Completed a first year residency, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which it was completed.
(e) Physical Standards
(f) English Language Proficiency: Physicians appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402 (d) and 7407 (d).
(g) Certification:Certification by the American Specialty Board preferred.

MAJOR DUTIES:

As a member of a multidisciplinary team he/she will focus on the assessment/evaluation and medication management of veterans who suffer from a variety of mental health conditions, including, but not limited to, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), substance abuse, depression, anxiety, and other related conditions.The incumbent will work with veterans from all theaters of service, including, Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom.Providing clinical assessment/evaluation of veterans with difficult and complex mental health issues and then selecting from a variety of resources and clinical approaches including non-direct and cognitive behavior therapy, behavior modification, insight oriented methods, family therapy, relaxation training, and medication management, etc.Serves as a consultant and advisor to other professional staff and the community on the assessment, education, and treatment of veterans with complex clinical problems, such as PTSD and war zone related stress reactions.
